I have only really needed 2 ins/2 outs for what I do in my home studio. I only record 1 track at a time, so I've been toying around with the idea of omitting my audio interface & just using 2 separate ADC/DAC units with the optical (TOSlink) input/output jacks of my Macbook pro. I have a Benchmark DAC-1, I got the idea because you can just plug the optical straight from your Macbook right into the DAC, no interface required for the monitors, maybe I could do the same thing with the inputs & eliminate a link in the signal chain.
I think this would simplify things, no drivers require & achieve great sound quality. Who knows, maybe the latency might be lower as well. Has anyone tried this?
